United struggles in basketball
United retained its lead in the Canterbury women’s indoor basketball A grade championship when it struggled to an unconvincing two-point win over Orients.
United’s unimpressive lt-14 win was achieved in a style in complete contrast to that of second placed Checkers, winners of the grade for the last six seasons. Checkers beat Burnham, 44-35, in a bright match. Points are:— United 20, Checkers 17. Brighton 16, University 13, Orients 12. Rex 10, Rangiora 4, Burnham 4, Rebels 0. BRIGHTON 32: J. Ancall 12, D. Beer 11, E. Butler 5, C. Symonds 2, G. Middleton 2. RIX 15: B. Thompson 6, L. Uren 4, L. Carswell 3, B. Miller 2.
Perhaps the most meritorious win of the round was that of third-placed Brighton, who beat Rex with a much sounder display of goal shooting. Brighton played with fire and purpose and after the opening 20 minutes was never in danger of being threatened by Rex. For Brighton. J. Ancall was sometimes a brilliant play-maker and always an integral part of a team which attempted as much pattern play as possible. D. Beer also displayed plenty of speed and aggression for the winner.
Rex, a team with an aggressive approach and several present or former leading players, lacked the command of the most important of the fundamental skills accurate shooting. It showed plenty of aggression also, but failed to achieve even a reasonable percentage of scoring shots. RANGIORA 2»: J. Borrell 12, M. Alabaster 9» J. Schluter 6, A. Bowse 2. HIILI 14: K.
