HIGHLIGHTS OF TRAINING Star Boa shapes well at Riccarton

The only enlivening feature in an otherwise dull morning’s track work at Riccarton yesterday was the encouraging showing of P. K. Ryder’s recent acquisition, Star Boa, on a heavy No. 7 track.

Star Boa, ridden by his race jockey, C. Ryder, a son of the trainer, was eight lengths ahead of Persian Spy (G. Lee) which beat Harold Bank (R. Thomas), which had stood the others up a good start, with Questionner (R. Lucas) a further eight lengths behind. Star Boa ran his six furlongs in imin 26 2-ssec, the last three in 40 2-ssec, and appeared to relish the going.

Star Boa, a last-start winner in heavy Wingatui going on June 7, when he won the six furlongs Electric Stakes, was bought shortly after that race by Mr and Mrs Ryder and Miss P. Ryder, and tomorrow's will be Star Boa's first race in the new ownership. Harold Bank's work was quite satisfactory as he made up a lot of ground over the concluding stages, and he is fit for his first-leg engagement tomorrow. Persian Spy, a three-old gelding by Persian Garden II out of Treasure Spi, and Questionner, a four year old gelding by Llanstephan out of China Girl, are unraced members of L.D.S Barr's Riccarton team.

Kayak (N. C. Cowles), an acceptor for the Redd iff Handicap and Rebel Lad, a two-year-old My Pal—Blarney Stone gelding, ran in from the three furlongs in 41 1-Soee. Bed Chips, ridden by the stable apprentice, L Grant, showed he is coming along nicely when he travelled well over three furlongs in 41 S3sec, time which

was equalled by Gold Count (G. Lewin). This two-year-old colt is a brother to Crepe de Chine, and is a good type. Onset, a last-start winner over Baltic Blue at Ashburton in March, is progressing pleasingly as he showed when be ran the last three furlongs of six in Msec. He looks as if he will figure prominently in th rec-year old events in the spring.

WANGANUI The lumpers dominated th« Wanganui training session yesterday, with meat attention being focused on the Winter Hurdles entry, Prince Sudak. He is still a maiden jumper and his entry in the assoc race Is something of a surprise.

He jumped quickly and confidently over four standard batten fences and ended the assignment with a crisp circuit on the inside grass. The Feilding iockey, T. Perawiti, who has the mount tomorrow, came to Wanganui for the schooling. Prince Sudak was more impressive than the other two to jump. They were Mystic Dancer and Lord Goldwyn, which turned on safe displays in solo efforts but lacked Prince Sudak’s dash. AWAPUNI Final Luca attracted attention when he stepped out at Awapuni yesterday, but as is usual with him he was only given a couple of steady rounds. He took no harm from his unlucky Wellington Steeplechase fall. Dingus, which is in the same race, was also given a light task. He looks to have thrived. StiUorgan a Haywards Steeplechase runner, worked a mile on the course proper the last six in imin 2Bsec and the final three Status was given a light task. He failed in the Wellington Steeplechase and a run in Hie Manawatu Hunt Cup next week will determine whether or not he goes south for the Grand National. TRENTHAM Foxrangi wili ba ridden by G. Walters In the Eric Rlddlford Steeples at Trantham, and yesterday the two pot together for the first time when they schooled at Trantham. Foxiangl's regular rider la R Walsh, but Walsh was injured when Foxrangi fell at the fourth fence last Saturday in the Wellington Steeples. Walsh has been discharged from hospital, but is still favouring his injured leg and will not ride this week. Foxrangi won the Itiddlford last year after losing Walsh at the second fence ta the Mat al Steeples, and fen spHa of bis

10-13, he might be the hardest to beat again this year. He went the complete round of six fences yesterday and, apart from slipping into one, went satisfacloeyHindi looked well when he ran half a mile in 55sec. the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. The seven furlongs of the Onslow Handicap might suit him better than the shorter Stewards’ Handicap last week, in which he was a promising fourth, but he has drawn No. 17.

The Riccarton galloper Car»< fin (Mauriri) went well went he ran six furlongs in Imin 35 l-ssec the last three in 42sec after a keen start. He was well out of the money last Saturday in the Whyte Handicap, but it was not his distance. The Winter Oats will suit him better.

Moubray (Gibba) finished pace work with three furlongs in 40 l-ssec. a good effort under a solid weight. Nullarbor (Dodds) went easily through threoquarter work.

Contradict (Raynor), the joint top-weight with Simon in the Winter Hurdles, ran the last half of a mile in 54 4-ssec. and the last three furlongs in 43 4-ssec.

Simon (Holy), worked a mile and a Quarter, the last mile in Imin 53 l-ssec and three rutlongs in 41 1-ssec. Main Defence. which will be suited by the deteriorating ground in the Riddiford Steeples, did pace work. Hi Vita* (S. • Brown) uiso went quietly round twice. Chaumont (Walters) schooled over seven fences. He is an outsider in the Haywards Steeples,
