Inter-club table tennis results
An A grade reierve player, L. Wilson (Oalllngton), made a triumphant appearance In the senior Inter-club table tennis competition when ho downed the highly regarded K. J. Cassidy (Riccarton II), In the tenth round last evening.
In the deciding set, Wilson was content to play Cassidy at his own defensive game. Although both played competently. Wilson was more reliable with his odd attacking stroke and reached 21 points with Cassidy five behind. Wilson fully extended Rlccarton’s other members, R. W. Mercer and A. Alabaster, the game with the former also going the full distance. , LEAD RETAINED Competition leader. University I. thrashed its second team without the loss of a match, and retained its two-point lead over Riccarton 11, which encountered some spirited opposition from Dalllngton before winning, 8-3. Wallabies, which has lost narrowly on several occasions this season, again suffered a similar fate. Selwyn won 15 games to 13 after the match score was tied at six-all. V. N. Brightwell was again Selwyn’s mainstay with three singles victories and two successes in the doubles. Wallabies’ two stalwarts, M. A. Cox and N. B. Radford, each gained two singles wins, but the team lacked a strong third player. RELEGATION MATCH
Linwood remained in the A grade competition when it beat the top A reserve team, Riccarton 11, 7-5, in a promotionrelegation match played prior to the beginning of the second round. P. Baken won his three singles matches and his team-mates. C. D. Liddell and L. Vallante, each gained two successes. Rlccarton’s main strength rested with its doubles combinations and the team took all three matches.
However; Linwood did not make a very auspicious start to the second half of the competition, losing to Riccarton I, 12-0. W. Adamson was particularly Impressive and did not concede a game, although he was still inclined to rush some of his drives. M. W. Burrowes (Avonslde I), after a shaky start against Mrs T. May (Avonslde II), recovered well to win in three games. He played some delightful shots—controlled loops and powerful drives—to dispose of G. Main and M. J. Warren later in the night. M. R. Spinks emulated Burrowes’s three singles wins and helped Avonslde I to a 8-4 victory over its second team. Points to date are: University I 20, Riccarton II 18, Selwyn 15, Avonslde I 14, Riccarton I 11, Dallington 10, Avonslde II 6, Wallabies 4, University H 2, Linwood 0.
