Response to pellets

A very positive response had been obtained to Rhizobia pellets when they had been drilled into a lucerne stand two months after sowing, Dr R. C. Close, of the Plant Diseases Division, at Lincoln, said last week. To an inquiry at the Geraldine conference on lucerne, he said the treatment produced dark green healthy plants compared with light green stunted plants which had not nodulated well. In the following season, the treated area gave a 60 per cent increase in output Dr Close said a response was also obtained with broadcasting the pellets, but in any event they must be applied on damp soil. The trial work gave similar results in autumn and in the spring, but the response with broadcasting was slower than with drilling.
