School pupils try out jobs

.. TAUPO. Taupo’s work force grew by 220 recently. All the fourth-formers from Taupo-Nui-Tia College went out to work for two days in jobs of their choice.
They became hairdressers. cooks, mechanics, clerks, shop assistants, nurses, gardeners, among many occupations. . Local businesses, banks anil Government departihenis co-operated to make the college’s annual careers days a success. , ffT’SK said: -It is esswuial io have the supportof,the community foPri scheme like this. “TASTEOFREAUTY" “Employers in Taupo - hawf been/good. Because of this co-operation, all fourthformers at the college for the last six or seven years havie been able to spend two days working in the jobs of their choice. It gives them a taste of reality.” Mr Drake said he did not know of any other school in New Zealand with such a Successful -careers scheme. “Placing more than 200 fourth-formers in jobs th*y are interested in involves a tremendous amount of organisation, but we think it is worth it.’’ he said. Perhaps the most unusual request came from a fourthform girl this year. She wanted to work as a mechanic. ■■ : * f t “We couldn’t see any reason against it. arid we had no trouble placing, her to .* local service station and garage,*’ said Mr Drake. .
