Remarkable growth
Four new premises in the 15 years since a branch was established in Christchurch—this is an indication of the growth of William H. Terry and Company, Ltd, which recently moved into a modern new building at 451-458 St Asaph Street.
This firm of importer*, indent agents, and manufacturers’ representatives was formed in 1946 by the late Mr W. H. Terry, who was joined in partnership in 1949 by Mr Theo J. Kyle, now managing director. The company has grown considerably during its 25 years and today it has more than 60 men "on the road” throughout New Zealand. Headquarter* are in Borthwick House, Wellington. Originally the South Island was covered from head office, but early ■ in 1957 a branch was established in Christchurch by the present manager, Mr P. M. Church. In subsequent years it has been found necessary to move premises with increasing sales and business activities, additional staff, and the need for greater storage spqee. The new premises in St Asaph Street meet the company’s requirement for planned development over a long period. Amenities include 5000 M. ft On the ground floor for storage apd store administration, There is off-street parking for eight vehicles.
A mezzanine area of about 1000 - sq. ft is furnished in modern decor for offices for management, textile and chemical technical sales representatives, and office staff.
The branch comprises two divisions: general and tex. tile. The general division is controlled by Mr B. R. Columbus, the company’s South Island chemical sales manager, and is further divided into chemical, plastics, and photocopying divisions. Chemicals Is a big part of the company’s activities, and this division holds more than 100 agencies for agricultural, industrial and pharmaceutical chemical manufacturers in Britain, Europe, the United States, and Japan. The plastics division services the plastic& industry with raw materials and machinery, and various overseas agencies are held for specialised blastic sheeting and film for fabricators, display, and advertising media. . - The textile division comes under the manager, Mr Church, Its principals include the Bentley Group of companies in the United Kingdom, which manufacture a wide range of sophisticated knitting machinery. Th* company has principals in many parts of the world tot raw material*; these include cotton yam, synthetic yams, fibres in many blends, and also exotic natural fibres such as cashmere, vicuna, and «spun into fine yams jh class knitted garments.
