Sydney Opera House
<N.Z. Ann.—CdpyHtM) SYDNEY, July 14. The general manager of the Sydney Opera House, Mr Stuart Bacon, - will retire soon after its long-awaited opening, in 1973. A former deputy general manager of the Festival Hall, London, Mr Bacon will by then have reached the retiring age Of 65. The controversial opera house has been rising slowly on Bennelong Point, in Sydney Harbour, for more than a decade, its erection having been retarded by political squabbling, soaring costs, design changes, and the dismir sal of its Danish architect, Mr Joem Utzon. When Mr Bacon took up the post of general manager in 1967, the opening was set for 1970, after a number of previous postponements. The New South Wales Government has advertised fat a deputy general manager and manager-designate at a salary of $14,500 a year.
