U.S. tests new missile
(N.Z. Pr««« Az«n.—Copi/riflht) SAN DIEGO (California), July 14The United States Navy has successfully tested a new missile, designed to destroy an enemy’s radar system at sea. "The secret tests have overcome many American fears about the Soviet Union’s arsenal of anti-ship missiles,” the “Evening Tribune,” reports. A United States Navy statement says that the gunboat Benicia test-fired an anti-radiation version of the standard missile, called A.R.M-, about 115 miles northwest of San Diego, where a remote-controlled target craft resembling a Russian Osa-class missile boat was destroyed by the first shot attempted. A.R.M. is designed to lock on to an enemy missile guiding radar beam, and reach the emitting antenna at twice the speed of sound.
