FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A depression centred to the north-east of the North Island is moving slowly east or south-east. A large, slow-moving _ anticyclone lies south-east of the South Island. Forecast to midnight: Canterbury: moderate variable winds, mainly easterly; cloudy and cold, with areas of rain, mainly light, and some, snow on the high country. Marlborough: south-easterlies, strong on the Cook Strait coast, moderate to fresh elsewhere; cloudy and cold, with occasional showers, especially in the east and about the ranges. Nelson and Ruller: moderate variable winds; scattered showers, especially on and near the ranges; cool. Outlook: partly cloudy weather predominating. CHRISTCHURCH READINGS
