“Satchmo”
Sir,—As an admirer of Louis Armstrong and saddened by his death, I would like to pay a tribute to this man, as well as his great music. He has become affectionately known as “Satchmo” throughout the world; as well as being a great musician, he became a great ambassador for his country. I was fortunate enough to attend one of his concerts a few-years ago and I could have sat there all night, time forgotten. He possessed tremendous personality which came through to the listener so vibrantly that it was not only the music but the man himself. He was able to establish rapport with his audience from beginning to end. America has lost a great man of music. He will be missed but never forgotten. He played from the heart, and I am sure I speak for many when I say he was loved and admired by all, no matter what race, colour, or creed.—Yours, etc., J. FLEMING. July 9, 1971.
