VALUABLE WORK OF ART IN MINIATURE.—Nine miniatures were sold on behalf of the Earl of Derby for £166,531 at a recent auction at Christies, London. Three were bought for the National Portrait Gallery, including one of Sir Francis Drake by Nicholas Hilliard which sold for 32,000 gns. Dr Roy Strong, the director of the gallery, is shown holding the tiny painting after the sale.
