C.O.R.S.O. figure for Christchurch

An amount of $50,766.69 was collected

in Christchurch during the C.0.R.5.0. cash appeal on Saturday, according to final figures released yesterday by the organiser for the Canterbury-West Coast area <Mr R. A. Consedine).

“We would like to thank the members of the public for their very generous response which was magnificent,” said the organisation in a statement. “As a result we are able to send our initial grant of $50,000 nationally to the refugees of East Pakistan in India.” Because of the generous response to Saturday’s household appeal, C-0.R.5.0. is considering a further grant for this work. The contributions also will enable C.0.R.5.0. to meet some commitments to development projects directed at removing- the causes of poverty, malnutrition and disease.

These projects basically were educational, involving training in modem methods of agriculture, community development, trade training, and home management, with a potential for creating employment, said the statement. It will be necessary during the next few months to look at the long-term problems of re-settling the East Pakistani refugees. It is expected that a large amount of development aid will be needed. C.0.R.5.0- intends to ask groups and organisations to embark on fund-raising pro-

jects during the coming months to further its relief and development efforts for the refugees of East Pakistan. Other appeal figures released by Mr Consedine, with many still to come from smaller districts, amount to $21,320. They comprise: Ashburton, $3736; Darfield, $395; Greymouth, $1543; Hokitika, $1482; Kaiapoi, $651; Leeston, $1010; Rakaia, $756; Rangiora, $1200; Reefton, $350; Temuka, $720; Timaru, $5670; Waimate, $1151; Westport, $1550; Lincoln, $118; Rolleston, $115; Glenavey, $49; Morven-Willow-bridge, $202; Cust, $9B; Greenpark, $191; Dunsandel, $192; Bumham, $l5l.
