Range-Rover honoured
f British Leyland’s unit que Range-Rover has 1 won the Don Safety ; Trophy, Britain’s r premier vehicle safety s award. s f Presented annually by Small and Parkes Ltd.,
the “Don” brake-lining manufacturer, in recognition of vehicle manufacturers’ and safety engineers’ contributions to road safety, the Don Trophy is now in its sixth year. Previous winners include the Jensen FF in 1966 and the Jaguar XJC in 1969. No award was made last year. This year’s award was won by the Range Rover against stiff opposition from both British and foreign cars and cornmer- . cial vehicles. It was described by Lord Cheshain, chairman of the judging panel, as “an outstanding vehicle with a specification which makes a valuable contribution to road safety.” Two notable features singled the Range Rovei out from the largest ever entry received for the trophy. It is the first medium priced vehicle to be sold as' standard with permanent four-wheel-drive and this facility, affording optimum control under adverse driving conditions, was commended oy the judges, along with the car’s orthopaedicallydesigned seating. Other significant safety features noted by the judges include the car’s dual brake line disc brakes, seat belts designed as an integral part of the seats, self-levelling suspension, transmission bandbrake providing emergency stopping power, large window area giving good all-round visibility, . all control
switches mounted on an energy absorbing collapsible steering column, padded roof lining, fuel tank protection and the model’s extra strong construction.
