Tug above limits

(N.Z. Preu Auoclation)

WHANGAREI, June 22.

Trials on the Lyttelton Harbour Board's new tug Canterbury have finished, producing results well above specifications. The managing director of the shipbuilders, Whangarei Engineering and Construction, Ltd (Mr J. F. Kelly), said today that the bollard pull ahead was 21.4 tons (the specification was 20 tons), astern was 14.2 tons (13 tons) and the free-running speed was 11.7 knots (11 knots). The massive eight-cylinder Allen engine, designed with a shaft horsepower of 1500, turned out 1700 sJi.p. during the bollard pull trials. It may be several days yet before the Canterbury leaves for Lyttelton as some painting has still to be done and a few other jobs are not finished.
