New president of Counties Assn

A North Canterbury farmer, Mr C. N. Mackenzie, “Happy Valley,” Motunau, is the new president of the New Zealand Counties Association, which held its annual conference at Rotorua last week. He succeeds another South Island president, Mr W. Baird, of Southland; this is a distinction because it has been usual for the presidency to alternate between the North and South Islands.

Chairman of the Waipara County Council, 1952, Mr Mackenzie was first elected to that council in 1947 as the representative for the Stonyhurst riding, succeeding his father, the late D. S. Mackenzie, who had retired from the council after serving for 12 years.

Mr Mackenzie has represented Waipara on Ward 11 of the counties association since 1952, including being the ward chairman since 1960 and the ward representative on the executive of the counties association for the same period. In 1966, Mr Mackenzie became the South Island vice-president of the counties association. For the last four years,~Mr Mackenzie has been chairman of directors of the New Zealand Counties Co-opera-tive Insurance Company. Mr Mackenzie is interested

in conservation also. For six years he was a member of the Soil and Conservation Council until the inception of the National Water and Soil Conservation Authority, when he became a member of that body. He is a member of the Physical Environment Council, functioning as an adjunct to the National Development Council. Mr Mackenzie was a Nuffield farming scholar to Britain in 1956. During World War 11, Mr Mackenzie served in the R.N.Z.A.F. in the Pacific as a pilot with the rank of flying officer. The two vice-presidents of the association are Mr A. D. Talbot (Geraldine County) and Mr J. M. Somerville (Waitomo County).

Cycling.—The New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association has elected two life members— Messrs C. G. Clark (Canterbury), and L. Wilson (Auckland).
