Hockey players cautioned
A Hagley Old Boys’ senior hockey player, W. A. Thomson, who was sent off the field last Saturday, is the first player to appear before the Canterbury Hockey Association’s judiciary committee this season.
At the C.H.A.’s management committee meeting last evening, the chairman (Mr T. I. Crossen) reported that Thomson had been warned 14 minutes before full-time by the umpire (Mr R. A. Fergus) for questioning a decision.
Eight minutes later, Thomson repeated the remarks and was told to stand behind the net. With one minute remaining in the match, Mr Fergus informed the Hagley coach (Mr P. Oates) that Thomson could return to the field. However, Thomson had left the field and did not rejoin the game. After the match, another Hagley player, K. Thomson, used insulting language to the umpire. W. Thomson stated that it was a frustrating game and his remarks were not directed at the umpires. He thought that from the inference of the umpire, he had received a temporary suspension. K. Thomson apologised for his actions.
Noting that W. Thomson was temporarily suspended twice, the committee decided that he should be cautioned and a strongly worded letter be sent to his club concerning team conduct. Mr Crossen told him that any future misconduct would be seriously dealt with by the judiciary committee and might result in a three-week suspension. Nomination tor tour—The C.H.A. decided to nominate Mr J. R. Gillespie as manager of the New Zealand team, which will tour overseas later this year, subject to his availability. Ground uncertain—Barnett Park (Redcliffs) was recommended as the venue tor the Canterbury-Queensland match, but if this ground created technical difficulties tor televising the fixture, then it would be played at Burwood Park.
