Defiance by Vorster

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

PRETORIA, June 22.

South Africa today looked headed for another row with the United Nations over its defiance of the International Court of Justice declaration on the status of South-West Africa (Namibia). The Prime Minister (Mr John Vorster) yesterday bluntly dismissed the World Court’s advice to the United Nations Security Council that South Africa occupied SouthWest Africa illegally and declared that his Government would continue to administer the territory.

In a nation-wide broadcast, only hours after the World Court’s findings were announced in the Hague, Mr Vorster said: “It is our duty to administer South-West Africa so as to promote the well-being and progress of its inhabitants.”
