Mid-winter celebrated
Three Christchurch men were among the 12 who celebrated Mid-winter's Day far from their homes and families at Scott Base, in the middle of the long Antarctic winter "night.” Mid-winter’s Day is halfway through the winter, between the last sunset, in April, and the welcome return of the sun, in August.
The men feasted on a dinner prepared by the cook, Mr F. Bond of Auckland. They had shrimp cocktails, chicken consomme, turkey and cranberry sauce, and Christmas pudding with brandy sauce, with mince pies to top off.
The New Zealand team at Scott Base New Zealand’s main Antarctic station comprises scientific technicians, maintenance, and communications staff under the leader, Mr B. Porter, of Auckland. The Christchurch men are Messrs P. R. Christenson, R. G. Nimmo, and R. A. McFerran.
Mid-winter’s Day is awaited in Antarctica as eagerly as Christmas, as is heralds the return of of the sun. This day has been celebrated with traditional dinners since the earliest days of Antarctic exploration.
