Labour ball
Eight debutantes were presented to the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) and Mrs Kirk at the annual ball of the Papanui branch of the Labour Party, held at the Winter Garden on Saturday evening. About 300 attended.
The debutantes were presented by the branch secretary, Mrs M. McCreanor. They were: Misses Julie Webster, Margaret Morton, Janet Wood, Christine Jacobs, Joelle Harry, Christine Gelling, Linda Young and Joanne Shankland. Mrs Kirk gave each debutante a red and white posy, a gift from the branch.
Specially-invited guests included Mr and Mrs Kirk; Mr J. Mathison, M.P. for Avon; Mr M. A. Connelly M.P. for Wigram, and Mrs Connelly; Mr B. G. Barclay, M.P. for Christchurch Central and Mrs Barclay; Mr R. P. B. Drayton, M.P. for St Albans, and Miss T. Drayton; Mr W. Massey, chairman of the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee, and Mrs Massey; Mr J. Wright, president of the Papanui branch of the Labour Party, and Mrs Wright; Mr and Mrs N. G. Pickering, and Mr and Mrs B. Rich. Members of the committee which organised the ball were: Mr E. McCreanor, chairman; Mrs M. McCreanor, secretary; Mesdames I. Roseveare, M. B. Maguire, J. Wright, M. Hines, H. Lowrie, Messrs J. Wright, L. Mannis, M. Wildermoth, M. Hobby and Miss V. Boyce.
