L Sutherland, of Greymouth (left), receiving the Newman Award from the Minister of Tourism (Mr Walker) at the National Travel Association’s conference in Wanganui. The Newman Award is given annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of New Zealand’s tourist industry. Mr Sutherland is the originator of Shantytown, a replica of a goldmining town of the 1860s at Rutherglen.
