Honeydew potential

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 20. New Zealand had a potential export industry for honeydew, said the Department of Agriculture Superintendent o Beekeeping (Mr E. Smaellie) said today. "Over 500 tons a year could easily be produced,” he said. Honeydew is the liquid sugar deposited on beech trees by aphides. It is collected, processed and deposited in the comb by honeybees in the same way as they collect nectar for honey. It has a distinctive flavour and medium ember colour. Until now beekeepers have used honeydew mainly for winter food for bees.

Many forested areas in the South Island had not been farmed for honeydew, although they were potentially highly productive areas, said Mr Smaellie.

“If these areas were made accessible to the beekeeper, there would be great potential | for a honeydew export indus!try in this country,” he said.
