Yodellers outclassed
A 67-year-old farmer shouted his way to first place with melodic yodelling of “Amazing Grace,” in the third annual national hollerin’ contest, Associated Press reports from Spivey’s Comer, North Carolina. Leonard Emanuel, from Godwin, North Carolina, beat a mountain-climbing yodeller from Oxford, England, John Lawrence, aged 33, who is now a student-teacher at North Carolina State University. With a khaki shirt and trousers covering his small, stoop - shouldered frame, Emanuel spoke gently in a trembling voice to the crowd of some 800 but then, putting his hands to his mouth, tore loose with "Amazing Grace,” and a “com shucking holler” he identified as “Blow the Hom Blues.”
They topped a field of 21 entries in the contest, which stems from efforts by the tiny crossroads community to recall the flavour of years gone by and its agricultural heritage.
