New school block

Plans for a new classroom and teaching block at Avonside Girls’ High Schoo! had been completed and would soon be in the hands of the Education Department for action, said the secretary of the school’s board of governors (Mr P. J. Halligan) yesterday. “Provision of more up-to-date accommodation is becoming a matter of real urgency,” -said the principal (Miss M. Stevenson). “As far as I have been able to ascertain, Avonside is now the second largest girls’ secondary school in New Zealand, second only to Epsom Girls’ Grammar School in Auckland. We have a roll of 1072 girls and we have been asked to take on 300 next year.” Heating in the gymnasium had been examined by the property supervisor of the Education Department, and as a result action would be taken, said Mr Halligan.
