No loan for mini-bus proposal

Because it was not prepared to recommend that a loan be raised to establish a mini-bus service, there was no good purpose to be served in receiving a deputation from the Christchurch Mini-Bus Association, the by-laws and finance committee reported to the City Council last evening.

Mr R. T. Shiels, president of the association, had written that the deputation would ask the council to apply to the Local Authorities Loans board to raise a loan of $75,000 to advance to private drivers to run eight to 10 mini-buses as owner-drivers. Cycling track: Subject to the Paparua County Council agreeing to upgrade Denton Park, the council decided that the track at English Park should not be improved for the Commonwealth Games or maintained further. All local bodies were advised that an improved Denton Park would be regarded as the metropolitan cycling venue in the future.

Planning costs. The council accepted responsibility for the excess over 1.120 c in the $1 in the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority’s levy for this year, but said it would expect prior consultation on preparation of estimates in future if payment of an excess figure was sought. The city’s share of the authority’s expenditure is $74,918, compared with $60,501 last year, an increase of 23.8 per cent. Election anathy. The South Christchurch Jaycees expressed concern about public apathy towards local body elections and said it was investigating a campaign on public education and awareness in the field, to cover the whole of metropolitan Christ-

church. It asked for the council’s support and a financial grant The chairman of the finance committee (Cr H. P. Smith) and Cr N. G. Pickering were authorised to discuss the proposal and agree to a grant of up to $lOO.

Art gift.—An oil by Miss Cora Wilding of farm buildings in the Mediterranean has been given to the city collection by her brother, Mr E. A. F. Wilding, of Te Mania.

Creche charges.—Because of the limited use and high cost of running the creche associated with the women’s rest rooms in Cathedral Square, the council agreed that a creche should not be provided when the present rest rooms are incorporated in the new Post Office buildings. However, In an attempt to make the existing creche service self-supporting, the council agreed that the charges should be 30c for the first hour, 40c for the second and 50c for the third. The present charge, unchanged for at least 15 years, is 10c an hour a child, with a maximum of 60c a day.

Taxi stand.—A fourth taxi stand in Cathedral Square was approved by the council. It will be on the north-east side of the traffic island on the east side of the Square. The traffic committee said this would eliminate all-day parking in the area which restricted traffic movement.
