RACING Flying Melda should test milers at Oamaru

Three of the last four Oamaru Winter Gup winners have been prepared in Canterbury stables. With some talented milers to represent the province in Monday’s field the prospect of another victory seems fairly bright. ,

If recent form proves the best guide the honours in the Oamaru Jockey Club’s $lOOO race are likely to go to Flying Melda. Although this Temuka - trained mare has made her mark as a sprinter, her style of running suggests she will master a mile.

Flying Melda has two recent open sprint wins on her record. In each of those victories—at Nelson and Waimate—she arrived on the scene with a powerful late run.

Although Flying Melda looks the best chance from South Canterbury stables there will be strong backing too for Default. This Bourbon Prince gelding will be one of two runners—the other is Strad—the Washdyke trainer, M. R. Jones, will saddle. Default, another whose best efforts have been marked by strong finishing runs, will be trying to improve on a sound patch of form. His last three starts have yielded three minor placings, two of which have been gained at a mile. Norma’s Lass and Sony will be the strongest form runners from Riccarton stables. The former has laststart winning form on her record, but Sony, a minor place-getter at his last two attempts, appeals more at a mile. STRONG TEAM Southland stables will field a strong team. One of the best prospects from this province should be Haste Ye Back. This Gore-trained Bellborough gelding will be switching to a mile—a distance which should be very much to his liking—after an exasperating string of open sprint placings. General Simin and Frosty Light, which will be attempting open class for the first

time, will also be trying to improve on form. Otago’s strength in the race diminished somewhat yesterday when the stablemates, Jay Ribbon and Blank Cheque, dropped out of the field. Empire King, third behind Stormy Seas and Time and Tide in the Waimate Cup at his latest attempt, might now be that centre’s strongest contender. The Oamaru Winter Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The second leg of this double will be the Elderslie Handicap, a race for hack sprinters.

Hack sprinters are always a bit unpredictable, but if the result follows betting trends Sea Serpent, Lord Nalson and Caraway are likely to battle it out

There will be an on-course double on the Pukeuri Hurdles and the Champion Hack Handicap. The River-ton-trained stablemates, Ayrshire' Dawn and Stranger, will probably be firm favourites in the first leg. The best second-leg chances are likely to be Kriste and Bosa Nova.
