Ashburton Fanciers ’ show of outstanding quality

The Ashburton Fanciers’ Society’s eightieth annual show which opened in Ashburton yesterday in the Sports Hall attracted poultry of outstanding quality and the judges of some classes considered the leading'birds to be in the top New Zealand class.

The show, one of the largest in New Zealand, attracted 1004 entries from all parts of the South Island. Six New Zealand and six South Island championships were at stake. The award for the best bird in the show went to E. W. Tippins, of Christchurch, with his entry of a white leghorn pullet. This bird was also the best light breeds bird irt the show, and won the George Bundy Memorial Cup for the best utility poultry, the Leghorn Cup, and the Oily Morriss Memorial prize for the best white leghorn.

Judge's comment* The Judge of the Old English game poultry, and bantams (Mr O. J. Bright, Christchurch) said the standard of entries in these sections was high, although the numbers, down on last year, were disappointing The winning cock bird in the game poultry section was outstanding, he said The duck secUon judge (Mr S. E. Frost, of Ashburton), said he considered some birds in this section to be the best In New Zealand, and he was extremely pleased with the over-all standard. The fancy bantam judge (Mr B. Graham, of Amberley) said birds in this section were wfll up to standard and would hold their own with any birds in the country. He felt however, that the number of entries was a little disappointing. Mr D. Findlay of Methven, said of the light breeds poultry section their quality was very good: He praised the winner of the White Leghorn pullet secUon and said It was one of the best he had seen. The judge of the budgerigar section, Mr C. A. Breach, of Christchurch, said he was im ; pressed with the quality of entries which were down on last year’s number. The winner of the budgie section he described as an outstanding bird, six months old, and a grey-green. The judge of the fancy pigeon section, Mrs M. Gilligan, said that the junior birds nearly all showed very good condition. The over-all quality of the various classes of fancy pigeons however, was variable with many birds requiring more preparation for the show. The winning birds In most breeds were of reasonable standard. With the best fancy pigeon a good white carrier, and the best opposite sex, a nice Magnani Modena, said Mrs Gilligan. The judges were:— Heavy breeds and juvenile Soultry, J. Glenle, Ashburton; ght breeds and commercial poultry, D. Findlay Methven; ducks, S. E. Frost. Ashburton; game fowl and game bantams, O. J.
