ASSAULT ON PENSIONER

Information on attacker

Information about a Maori who was seen in Manchester Street about the time police believe a 65-year-old pensioner was assaulted on Wednesday evening has been given to Christchurch detectives.

They think a Maori assaulted and robbed Ambrose O’Malley, of 263 Armagh Street, but no other description is available. Detective Sergeant D. N. Scott, in charge of the inquiry, said yesterday that several persons had given information about a Maori seen in the area, but he wanted to hear from anyone who had seen Mr O’Malley in Manchester Street between 5 p.m. and 6.15 p.m. Mr O’Malley is sft tall, of frail build, and was wearing a blue garbardine raincoat, a white shirt and tie, possibly gloves, light green trousers, bright green socks, and black shoes.

He was knocked to the ground in the M.E.D. yard by a man who grabbed him by the collar and said: “Come in here.” The assailant punched and kicked Mr O’Malley in the head. At one stage, the attacker apparently tried to choke Mr O’Malley as he lay on the ground, before leaving him in a pool of blood.

Mr O’Malley, his mouth badly swollen, was unable to give much more information to detectives yesterday, but will be interviewed again today.
