Growth expected in J.C. yachting
Further growth in the number of young yachtsmen transferring to the J.C. class at the conclusion of their P Class days is expected now that fibreglass hulls have been overwhelmingly approved by a postal ballot of boat* owners. The J.C. register, controlled by the Christchurch club, has expanded steadily and now contains
143 yacht* of this design. The recent change in construction will lower main* tenance costs and increase resale value. A 12ft, two-man intermediate class sailed by crews up to 20 years of age, the J.G Is particularly suitable for harbour and estuary sailing waters. Its only competitor in the
tntonnediato age group la the which was introduced 50 years ago and is considered by many administrator* to be unsuitable for modem conditions.
It is expected that the Takapuna will be phased I out of national competK tion in the near future. | This would leave the J.G; as the only suitable trainer in this country for; teenagers wishing to' obtain experience before! moving on to the larger RI Class, Javelin or Flying: Dutchman types. In successfully seeking to have the J.C. recognised as a national class by the New Zealand! ! Yachting Federation,! [ Christchurch was sup* [ ported by the Canterbury ; and Mount Pleasant clubs. [ Already the design, [with the assistance of the; [local R class squadron, [has been adopted by Can* [terbury secondary schools i and is in the process of I being accepted for inter* ! school competition in [ Auckland.
: The winner of the New Zealand J.C. championship [ becomes the holder Of the [Olympic Trophy, the gold [medal diploma won by P. [G. Mander and J. Cropp [at Melbourne in 1956.
