The Press FRIDAY, JUNE 18,1971. Governor-General-designate
The selection of Sir Arthur Porritt as GovernorGeneral of New Zealand was something of a constitutional milestone in this country’s progress to nationhood; he is the first native-born New Zealander to fill the high office that directly links the people of New Zealand with their Queen and Head of the Commonwealth. The selection of Sir Denis Blundell to succeed him carries the constitutional process a stage further, and, indeed, completes it. For while Sir Arthur Porritt earned his professional and athletic distinctions as an expatriate, Sir Denis Blundell’s distinguished record as a lawyer, administrator, soldier, and sportsman was built up in this country. He and Lady Blundell have been gracious ambassadors for New Zealand during his term as High Commissioner in London; and the announcement that he is to be the next Governor-General will give much satisfaction to New Zealanders and to New Zealand’s friends abroad.
