Blade shearing training
Between three million and four million sheep are shorn with blades every year in the South Island high country.
The Wool' Board’s field service plays an important part in instructing young men in the art of blade shearing and this year it will be holding a course at Rakaia from July 5 to 16. The board’s field director, Mr Godfrey Bowen, said the board had a responsibility to keep up instruction in this type of shearing as well as machine shearing.
“After taking part in this two-week course, a blade learner will be able to take his place on the board and shear to the satisfaction of contractor and grower,” he said. “He will still be a learner, but with a good grounding which will mean his daily tally will quickly improve.”
This year the board has a new blade instructor. He is Mr Allan Roffey, twice a New Zealand champion and one of the world’s outstanding blade shearers.
