Role of adult education

More emphasis needs to be given to the role of adult education in New Zealand, the chairman of the National Council of Adult Education (Sir Alan Danks) said in Christchurch last evening addressing educationists. He said that the provision of adult education in rural areas and in the area of Maori education was causing concern to his council.

Adult education was not yet very effective for persons who wanted help to cope with their roles and responsibilities in everyday life, said Sir Alan Danks.

There was a tendency for adult education to attract disproportionate numbers of those who had done well in previous education.

"It is not a good adult education system that chatters to its friends all the time,” he said.
