F.B.I. looks for violations
(N.1.H.-Aouter— Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 16.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating possible criminal violations in the publication by the “New York Times” of Pentagon papers, documents tracing the history of United States involvement in the Vietnam war, a Justice Department spokesman said last night.
“The F. 8.1. investigates all allegations of Federal criminal violations and is doing so in this case,” the spokesman said.
He was commenting to reporters after a New York Judge imposed a temporary ban on the “New York Times” publishing further extracts from the papers, which the Government says are topi secret defence documents. The law used by the Justice Department in seeking i the restraining order makes it a criminal offence for anyone having unauthorised possession of. classified docu-| ments to communicate, deliver or transmit the material to anyone not entitled to receive it.
Another law that might be involved, and which was cited by the Defence Department yesterday, makes it a crime to publish classified information.
Both laws carry a maximum penalty of 10 years gaol and a $lO,OOO fine.
