Hanmer pooh

Sir,—Why is it that nearly all of our resort projects get loaded up with uninformed, starry-eyed do-gooders and then become exercises in architectural extravagance? Look what they are doing to poor old Hanmer Springs. Here we have a resort with a little hot spring capable of producing only 70 gallons a minute, and yet our “experts have geysered their proposal costs up to nearly $150,000 just to exploit, or try to, this very limited and rather doubtful heaithgiving product of Hanmer. No wonder Mr Walker and others are playing hard to get! Well I, for one, would be prepared to drink one whole gallon of this hot elixir in public if I could not design and have built, for half the above cost, pools and the required amenities of a size to suit the spring’s capacity and tq the complete satisfaction of the residents of Hanmer, Any takers?—Yours, etc., LAST RESORT, June 16, 1971.
