Brothers first
and second
The Carter brothers, of Greenpark, who are twins, took first and second places in the qualifying event for the New Zealand ploughing championships held by the Hinds Young Farmers’ Club on the property of Mr R. J. Moore at Lynnford this u-eek.
Out of eight competitors, who came from Palmerston to Takaka, Gordon T. Carter, with 154 points, qualified to plough in the national championships next month. He has qualified about four or five times to take part in the championships, and his best placing has been eighth. His brother, Peter D. Carter, was second this week, with 150 points, and D. Brown, of Temuka, and E. J. Croy, of Wakanui, a former national champion, were third equal, with 149 points. More than 30 tractors were in action at the match, which was attended by about 250 people. The ground was fairly damp and a little slippery on top but dry and crumbly underneath. In other classes placings were: Coulter cut: G. Smith (Rakaia) 1 J. Gardiner (Rakaia) and E. M. Duncan (Christchurch) equal 2. Farm ploughing.—R. Ellis (Hinds) 1, B. M. Davidson (Hinds) 2. Plain ploughing.—R. T. Greygoose (Methven) 1. The Thomas Taylor Shield was won by A. D. Begg (Wakanui), the Chisnal Cup by R. Smith (Hinds), and the Gluyas Motors Challenge Cup by Ellis (Hinds). Dog trials held in association with the match resulted.—Open: D.
