Cattle imports cause concern
(N.Z. Press Assoclotton) WHANGAREI, June 15. The Government’s decision to approve cattle imports direct from France might hinder New Zealand’s live cattle trade with Australia, said the chairman of the Northern Wairoa sub-province of Federated Farmers (Mr A. J. Smales) today. The decision to import foreign cattle direct from France had caused grave concern among Northland cattle breeders, Mr Smales said. “Although I know the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Carter) would not approve such a measure unless he was sure himself there would be no risk of bringing in such diseases of foot and mouth, blue tongue, etc., I feel the precautions to be taken should be publicised. “The importation of these cattle direct from France could also cause another stumbling block in our muchwanted meat trade with America,” Mr Smales said.
