“Miss Canterbury” for contest in Japan

A very surprised “Miss Canterbury,” 18-year-old Cheryl Hopkins of Christchurch,. learned yesterday that she will represent New Zealand at the “Young Miss International” contest in Japan next month. Miss Hopkins, who was fourth in the “Miss New Zealand” contest, had just returned to her job in a Riccarton bank when she was told the -news by the “Miss New Zealand” contest promoter, Mr Joe Brown, of Dunedin.

“None of the girls in the contest knew about the 'Miss Young International’ contest, although New Zealand has sent girls to it before,” Miss Hopkins said.

The contest, which will be held in Tokyo from July 10 to 14, will attract girls from 50 countries. ft is open to girls from 16

to 19, and carries a first prize of $2688.

ft is run on the same lines as the “Miss International” contest, recently won by a New Zealand girl. Miss Jane Hansen, of Wellington.

Miss Hopkins had teen selected for her deportment and personality, and because she was a blonde, said Mr Brown. Blondes had an appeal to the Japanese, he said.
