POLLUTION LAWS
Concern about statement
The New Zealand Clean Air Society was concerned about the statement made by the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) at Dallington on Sunday, the president of the society (Mr P. V. Neary) said yesterday. Mr Muldoon was reported to have said, when he was asked what the Government was doing to give a lead on pollution, that by-laws already existed to deal with the problem, Mr Neary said It had been understood that the Govern-ment-sponsored Wellington Air Pollution Committee had produced sufficient evidence to justify an additional bill to be presented to the House of Representatives this session to combat sources of air pollution not covered by existing regulations. Mr Muldoon apparently thought it was no good blaming the Government when perhaps the blame lay close to home—ineffective local bodies, said Mr Neary, “We hope that Mr Muldoon was referring to pollution generally in his openty expressed thoughts on legislative requirements,” said Mr Neary "This society faithfully believed that we were to have additional legislation for cleaner air promoted by the Government in the present session of Parliament.”
