Emergency extended
(N.Z.P.A.-Reutcr) SALISBURY, June 14. Rhodesia’s state of emergency—instituted just before the country’s unilateral declaration of independence from Britain in November, 1965—has been extended for a further year by the Rhodesian Parliament. The extension was sought in the House of Assembly by the Minister of Justice, Law and Order (Mr Desmond Lardner-Burke). He said the Government would revoke the emergency at the earliest opportunity but conditions made this impossible at present. The two main reasons for continuing the state of emergency were, he said, the threat of terrorist infiltration from Zambia and the threat posed by United Nations economic sanctions. Mr Lardner-Burke said there had been no guerrilla incidents in the last 12 months, but the threat remained.
