1974 CHCH GAMES

Team likely from Lesotho The small southern African nation, Lesotho, is likely to be represented at a Commonwealth Games for the first time at Christchurch in 1974. Lesotho, which before it gained independence from Britain in 1966 was known as Basutoland, has applied for membership of the British Commonwealth Games Federation and the application will probably be heard at a meeting of the federation during the Munich Olympic Games next year. In correspondence between Lesotho and the federation—copies of which have been sent to the Christchurch Games organising committee —the country expresses a desife to compete at Christchurch in 1974. If Lesotho does send a team it will bring to 43 the number of nations expected to take part. All of them have been asked to estimate likely' team numbers, and in a reply received recently the English contingent, which will be second only to Australia’s in size, was put at 190—10 fewer than the organising committee had anticipated in the estimate it drew up to approximate its commitment in air fares.
