“Press” school chess
None of the 12 schools tai “The Press” sponsored chess teams competition manged to win all of its six matches in the first round. But, by virtue of its 4J-1J defeat of Burnside, the Shirley Boys’ High School team has become the favourite to collect the $6O first prize. The Shirley Boys’ High School team is led by V. Small, the winner of the individual school pupils’ tournament in the May term holidays. Against such strong competition, it was pleasing to see Heaton Intermediate win one match from St Bede’s. T. Poole, on board three, won his match for Heaton, while C. Shaw lost his game only after the result had * been adjudicated. The necessity of filling in the score sheets, as provided by the New Zealand Chess Association, was illustrated by this match, which was unfinished
I after the two-hour time limit was reached. Results of the first round were.—Zone one: Hillmorton 4, Lincoln 2; Christchurch Boys’ 4|, Cashmere 1J; Riccarton 4, Hagiey 2. Zone two: Shirley Boys’ 4J, Bumside St Bede’s 5, Heaton Intermediate 1; St Andrew’s 31, Linwood 21. Points are.—Zone one: Hillmorton, Christchurch Boys’, Riccarton 1, Lincoln, Cashmere, Hagiey 0. Zone two: Shirley Boys’, St Bede’s, St Andrew’s 1, Bumside, Heaton, Linwood 0. The draw for the second round which will be played on Friday, June 18, at the first named school is.—Zone one: Hilhnorton v. Cashmere, Christchurch Boys’ v. Hagiey, Riccarton v. Lincoln. Zone two: Bumside v. Linwood, Heaton Intermediate v. Shirley Boys’, St Andrew’s v. St Bede’s.
