ICELAND VOTES

Coalition may go (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) REYKJAVIK, June 14. Iceland’s coalition Government appeared today to have ended its 12 years in office as computer results predicted it would lose its majority in the 60-seat Athing, the world’s oldest Parliament. No official results from the General Election yesterday have yet been announced from any of Iceland’s eight constituencies. But after 90 per cent of the votes in Reykjavik and 80 per cent of those in north-eastern Iceland were counted, it seemed that the ruling coalition of the Conservative Independence Party .and the Social Democrats had failed to retain their majority. Computers predicted that they would hold only 28 seats, compared with 32 before the election. This was caused in part by Social Democrat losses but mainly because the recently-formed opposition Liberal and Leftists’ Union, led by Mr Hannibal Valdimarsson, would obtain four seats in the new Parliament.
