Beef container loading begins

(From Out Own Rejpofiet) TIMARU, June 10. Six containers of cartoned beef, for shipment to the east coast of the United States and Canada, wore railed to Port Chalmers from Pareora today.

The containers, some of 14 to be sent by the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd,

will be stored at Port Chalmers awaiting the arrival of the Columbus New Zealand jater this month.

The shipment will inaugurate the Columbus Line’s container service to the South Island. The importance of the new service, and the significant role being played by the New Zealand meat industry Was emphasised today by the c.f.M.‘s works manager (Mr J. Gallagher). Of the 27 insulated containers to be loaded in the South Island, C.F.M, would supply 18, said Mr Gallagher. The Columbus New Zealand, which catties 889 Containers, will load at New Zealand ports about 106 insulated containers of meat, two containers Of chilled Chinese gooseberries from Auckland, and more than 320 dry containers filled with wool pelts and general cargo.

Each container of Specialised beef cuts and manufacturing boneless beef loaded at Pareora holds about 17 tons. The containers Were landed at Port Chalmers yesterday, and loaded today at Pareora.

They were inspected by the Department of Agriculture at Port Chalmers, sealed, and railed to Timaru. They were Sealed again after loading. At Port Chalmers they will Stay seated as self-contained refrigeration units until they are put to the ship.
