Congregations to merge
The congregations of the Sydenham and Beckenham Methodist churches will amalgamate at the end of this month, after which the 93 - year - old Sydenham church, on the comer of Colombo and Brougham streets, will no longer be used.
Factors which have made the amalgamation necessary are, according to the Rev. A. R. Witheford, the continual taking over of residential oroperties by business, industrial and town-planning interests, the decreasing and ageing population in the area and the motorway which will run alongside the Sydenham church.
The combined congregations will use the Beckenham church, a new building which was opened in 1967. Special functions and services have been planned to mark the occasion, including a service on June 27 when past ministers will officiate.
