MASTER RETIRES
Captain C. B. Searby, master of the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s dredge Te Whaka retired on Tuesday after 28 years of service with the board.
Captain Searby, aged 65, was bom in Christchurch and began his seafaring career 52 years ago aboard the New Zealand Government training ship Amokura. He was then 13. During his 24 years at sea before joining the Lyttelton Harbour Board, he served in a number of vessels locally and overseas. One of his favourite ships was the topsail schooner Huia, engaged in the intercolonial trade. The Huia was one of the fastest vessels of her type in those days, Captain Searby says. Another of his favourite ships was the former Union Company liner Tahiti. Captain Searby has served at one time or other on all the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s craft. He was for a considerable period master of the veteran dredge Canterbury. Captain Searby, who lives in Lyttelton, has no special plans for his retirement.
