C.J.C. loss of $9882 for year
The Canterbury Jockey Club lost $9882 this season. This followed a profit of $ll2O last year. The club records healthy increases in revenue, but rising costs, particularly wages, racecourse maintenance, advertising, printing, stationery and race expenses, amounting to $15,642, have resulted in a substantial loss.
Wages rose from $23,478 to $27,133, racecourse maintenance from $11,401 to $14,380, advertising, printing, and stationery from $10,899 to $15,518, and race expenses from $48,073 to $52,462.
The club gave $214,000 in stakes during the year, an increase of $19,300, says the chairman (Mr H. H. Elworthy) in his report. Of that total $202,900, an increase of $12,900, was provided by the club, and sponsors and donors of trophies provided
$11,500, an increase of $6400. Mr Elworthy will move at the annual meeting on June 23 that Mr D. W. J. Gould be elected an honorary life member of the club in recognition of his service as a steward and member of the committee over a period of 38 years.
Members at the annual meeting will consider a proposal to increase the members’ subscription. Such a proposal is being put forward because of the increase in public admission fees made last year. Another change of rules being considered would limit the chairman’s term to five years in succession, except that the committee might, if it so desired, unanimously elect by secret ballot a chairman for a term of one further year at the end of the fiveyear term.
