Men sent to
prison (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 9. Two young men who stole two parakeets from an aviary in New Lynn and who had earlier admitted other charges of assaulting policemen, have been sentenced in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court to terms of imprisonment. The Magistrate, Mr H. Rosen, sentenced Frederick James Smith, aged 22, a shearer, to a total of 18 months imprisonment on five charges. Smith had previously pleaded guilty to the charges. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment for unlawfully taking a car, one months imprisonment for assaulting a constable and 12 months imprisonment on each of two charges of burglary.
A term of six months imprisonment, to be cumulative on the sentences for the burglaries, was imposed on Smith on a charge of driving while disqualified, his third such conviction.
John Jacob Geerts, aged 19, a farmhand, was sentenced to two months imprisonment on each of two charges of assaulting a policeman, nine months imprisonment on each of two charges of burglary and six months imprisonment for unlawfully getting into a car. The prison terms are to be concurrent.
Geerts had earlier pleaded guilty to all the charges.
