Two suggestions
Britain’s proposed entry into the - Common Market brought a couple of interesting suggestions this week. Firs®- the Idea (we’ve heard it before) that Australia should turn from dairying to concentrate on beef production and import its butter from New Zealand. The gentleman offering this suggestion pointed out that not only would this solve a problem for. New Zealand, but Australia could step up its margarine production to supply the whole of South-East Asia. To protect the dairy industry margarine produc-
tion is pegged to a quota which is a sore point with the margarine makers and those pressing the claims of poly-unsaturated fats. The other suggestion was to break with Britain and set up a new commonwealth to be called Anzac, of Australia and New Zealand combined. It was pointed out that. Wellington was no further from. Canberra than Perth —although it’s only in writing that I’ve realised that there might be some significance in it for New Zealanders. But I doubt if anyone would take either suggestion seriously.
