E.E.C. pros and cons
(N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, June 7. Groups for and against Britain joining the Common Market took out rival advertisements today in “The Times”. The public relations battle on the issue coincided with Britain and the Common Market reconvening in Luxemburg for a key round of negotiations. The Common Market Safeguards Campaign, which opposes joining Europe, said in a three column advertisement: “We believe that the majority of the British public are right in rejecting the terms now proposed for British entry into the Common Market.”
It was signed by antiMarket members of Parliament—both Labour and Conservative —and by peers and labour union leaders. The rival advertisement, sponsored by the Liberal European Action Group, stressed that among those “also against the Common Market” were the Communist Party of Great Britain, the outlawed Irish Republican Army, League of Empire Loyalists, the National Front, and the Soviet Union.
