Mr H. R. Wigley, the managing director of the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Company, last week received, on behalf of the company’s airlines division, the National Travel Association award for the Wakatipu district business which had done most during the year to promote tourism. The award, a framed certificate, is presented annually by the Queenstown branch of the association for outstanding contributions to the tourist industry. The award was presented last night by the branch president, (Mr D. N. Elliott). It was awarded for the introduction of the Haw-ker-Siddeley 748 RotoruaMount Cook-Queenstown air service and the company’s new twin Otter and two Brit-ton-Norman Islander aircraft.

Grants amounting to $1875 have been approved for the year by the board of the John Cowen’s St George’s Hospital Trust Fund. In the 18 years since the fund was set up, annual grants amounting to more than $34,000 have been made. The grants have assisted patients to meet medical and surgical fees. The board comprises the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt), the chairman of the executive of St George’s Hospital (Mr L. A. Bennett) and the District Public Trustee (Mr V. E. Barker).
