RACING Meldie likely at Wingatui

tf The Press’* Special Service

DUNEDIN.

Meldie, in the Birthday Handicap, and Crunch, in the Empire Handicap, will be a wellsupported combination for the T.A.B. double at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting at Wingatui today.

Meldie, a former outstanding three-year-old with a •Winter Cup and an Islington Handicap at Riccarton and a Waterloo Handicap at Trentham to his credit, showed a return to form at his last start when he proved a class above the opposition on the first day of the Southland meeting. E. J. Didham has elected to ride Meldie today although he rode Blank Cheque in his winning run at Wingatui on Saturday.

The J. A. Wilson-H. J. Powell stable has two runners listed to start today in the Birthday Handicap—Jay Ribbon, an impressive last-start winner at Invercargill, and Blank Cheque. But Wilson said yesterday that only one horse would run and it would probably be Blank Cheque, which is under offer at a five-figure price. Red Carpet, which looked the unlucky runner on the first day of the meeting, might be the one to cause an upset if he repeats that performance. Red Carpet was blocked for a run on the turn then finished fast to get within a neck of Blank Cheque. The best of the others may be Effgee and Hydel. Effgee was the runner-up on both days of the Southland meeting and Hydel will be better suited by the longer distance today .

Over a furlong further today, Crunch makes outstanding appeal in the second leg. He did not have time to get balanced over six furlongs on the first day when the tearaway tactics of Just Ace and Shewetta disrupted the field.

Nevertheless, he ran on solidly to finish third, a neck and neck from the winner, Just Ace, which, like Shewetta, is missing on this occasion.

Most opposition to Crunch is expected to be provided by Royal Mount, an impressive winner on the second day of the Southland meeting. The on-course concession double will be on the June Hurdles and the Southern Improvers’ Handicap.
